Missions and Outreach

(contact:  Ken Okazaki or Lisa Wehara, missions@sturge.org)

“…whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.”  Matthew 25:40

We give thanks to God for the generous hearts of all who help with their time and resources and ask for your continued prayers and support for this ministry.  Our goal is to reflect the love of Jesus Christ through the obedience of His call to serve the needy of our community, locally and globally.

We have been blessed to be able to serve in several areas to help the community near and far.

Missionary Support  We are dedicated to find ways to fulfill God's greatest commandment and share the gospel that is truly Good News to a broken world.  In 2010, we began to support missionaries on an ongoing basis.  Please visit our Missionary Support web page and keep each missionary in your prayers.  Missionary support guidelines are available for your review.

CityTeam Ministries – In February 2007, we began serving at CityTeam Ministries in San Francisco by providing worship, a message and dinner every fourth Saturday of the month.  Most volunteers serve in San Francisco, while some work faithfully behind the scenes preparing food at church.  The number of people lining up for a meal has been increasing steadily, especially with the downturn of the economy.

Join us as God leads you to pray for CityTeam.  Here is the prayer list.

Backpack Sunday – We have held several backpack events during past summers.  The backpacks, school and classroom supplies have been donated to Horrall Elementary School in San Mateo and CityTeam San Francisco for distribution to students in need in time for the new school year.

School Clean Up (Horrall Elementary School) - We gather volunteers to join the school parents and children to help paint lunch tables and steel beams, to plant,  and to clean up the grounds.  We provide flowers and plants and also serve a simple lunch for the volunteers.

Operation Christmas Child – This project brings joy and hope to children in desperate situations around the world through gift-filled shoeboxes and the Good News of God’s love.  Early November, over 100 adults and children of all ages gather to pack shoebox gifts for children.  We celebrate God through worship, dedicate the shoeboxes, and share a meal together in this event.

Compassion International (Compassion) and World Vision – Compassion is dedicated to releasing children from poverty by working through local churches to provide child development programs to deliver children from economic, physical, social and spiritual poverty.  Compassion also speaks out for children in poverty; and informs, motivates and equips others to become advocates for children.  Similarly, World Vision is dedicated to working with children, families and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.

Many in our congregation continue to sponsor children through Compassion and/or World Vision in countries such as El Salvador, Brazil, Haiti, and Indonesia.  Children’s Ministry has also sponsored children since 2000 and is currently sponsoring a girl, Madelin Yocasta Serverino Rosario from the Dominican Republic.
